A 30-year-old woman and her three children were crushed to death at Reay Road after a trailer ran over them while they were sleeping on the side of the road early on Tuesday morning.
The driver of the trailer, Guyal Gaur, 25, who tried to flee from the spot, was chased by residents and dragged to Byculla police station, where he was arrested.
The deceased have been identified as Sona Shaikh, her two daughters Luban, 10, and Shabana, 6, and son Yasin, 2. Shaikh and her children live in a shanty on the pavements in the Sainath slum area, but on Tuesday they had chosen to sleep on the roadside.
The incident took place around 5 am outside the Atlas Mill compound. The Byculla police said the driver was heading towards south Mumbai at high speed when he lost control of the vehicle and swerved onto the side of the road, running over the four sleeping people.
All four were rushed to JJ hospital where they were declared dead on admission.
People who witnessed the incident said the driver did not stop the vehicle after the accident and instead tried to speed away. However, some residents from the slums chased the trailer on foot for nearly 1.5 km and finally intercepted the trailer at Wadi Bunder.
“We have booked Gaur under sections 304 (A) causing death by negligence, 279 (rash driving or driving on a public way) of the Indian Penal Code and under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicle Act,” said Arun Dhanawade, assistant police inspector, Byculla police station.
