Two newly-recruited Home Guard jawans met with a train accident while they were on duty on Saturday evening.
While Belapur resident Ravindra Marathe (22) died, Ulhasnagar resident Sushant Yadav (25) has been admitted to Sion Hospital.
“At 5.25 pm, a local hit the two on Kopri Railway Bridge. The duo, along with a police constable, was deployed at a robbery point when the accident took place. We are investigating as to how the accident occured,” said Ashok Kumar Jadhav, senior police inspector of Thane Government Railway Police (GRP).
There were mixed reports about the incident. There were reports that the guards were trying to save an inebriated woman, who was crossing the tracks, while other reports say the accident took place when they were crossing the tracks during patrol duty.
GRP officials, however, did not confirm the report. Marathe and Yadav had joined the Home Guards two months ago after completing their training. They were deployed with the Thane GRP last month.
“Marathe and Yadav were deployed at robbery point on Kopri bridge as many crimes take place there. At times, they have to cross the tracks to keep a check on both sides. Since the duo was on duty, I have asked the senior GRP inspector to compensate the Marathe’s family and the injured official’s too. He has promised to look into it,” said Suresh Gaikwad, Thane district commander of Home Guard.
