The locomotive was run inside the metro’s depot at DN Nagar. “The locomotive was run to test the fitness of the tracks that we have laid,” a senior MMOPL official said.

MMOPL is constructing the 11.07-km long metro line, which it claims will be functional by December 2012.

The MMOPL has so far laid out 3.7km of tracks for the metro rail . The total length of the track laid inside the depot is more than 1.5km while 2.2km has been laid on the viaduct.

The new line will ease traffic congestion and bridge the gap between the eastern and western parts of the city. The project will also reduce travel time between Versova and Ghatkopar from 90 minutes to 21 minutes, and will provide rail-based access to MIDC and SEEPZ.
