A 22-year-old man was arrested on Monday for allegedly passing lewd comments at a 20-year-old woman in Chembur and beating up the woman’s colleague, who confronted the accused. The police are on the lookout for his two accomplices.
The police said the incident occurred at around 8.30pm on Sunday, when the woman, who works as a salesgirl at a retail shop in Chembur, was walking back to her residence. The accused, identified as Kamaljeet Singh, allegedly blocked the victim’s path.
“He then passed some lewd remark at her,” said Dilip Yadav, senior inspector, RCF police station.
The woman then went back to the shop and told her colleague, Azharuddin Sayeed, 27, about the incident. Sayeed accompanied the woman and confronted the trio.
“The three accused claimed that they had not passed any remarks and were just talking among themselves. Sayeed got into a fight with them and sustained minor injuries,” said Yadav.
The three then fled.
The woman informed her parents about the incident, who accompanied her to the RCF police station. A case was registered against the accused for outraging the modesty of a woman and voluntarily causing hurt. While the police arrested Singh, the other two accused are on the run.
