The Mumbai police on Tuesday registered a case of abetting suicide against Rahul Raj Singh, the boyfriend of actress Pratyusha Banerjee, who killed herself on April 1. Rahul remains at Shree Sai Hospital in Kandivli, where he was admitted on Sunday morning after complaining of severe chest pain. A police source said he will be arrested once he is discharged from the hospital. Apart from abetting suicide, Rahul has charged with causing hurt, intentional insult to provoke breach of peace and criminal intimidation.
The police filed a first information report (FIR) after Pratyusha’s parents, Shankar and Soma, pressed charges against Rahul. Soma went to Bangur Nagar police station on Tuesday afternoon and recorded a fresh statement with the police.
In their complaint, Shankar and Soma said Rahul had kept everything under his control during his relationship with their daughter. They claimed she had even complained to them about him the day before she took her life.
“He would not let her talk to any of her friends. They used have a lot of fights and he also used to hit her. She would complain to us every time they fought. I would resolve their fights and ask them to concentrate on their careers,” her mother told the police in her fresh statement.
They also alleged that Rahul lied to her throughout their relationship, telling her that that he owned property in Mumbai and Ranchi. Shankar said, “Our daughter has died; my world is destroyed. We have told police everything. I trust the law, and the truth will come out. We did not register the complaint earlier as our daughter’s last rites had not been completed.” Pratyusha’s last rites were conducted on Monday.
Shankar added that he told the police everything about how his daughter had suffered. “Until he (Rahul) is punished, her soul will not rest in peace,” he added.
The police now plan to record the statements of residents of the Kandivli building in which Pratyusha previously lived in the hope that they will be able to shed more light on the nature of the couple’s relationship. They also plan to call in an ex-girlfriend of Rahul whom many of Pratyusha’s friends have accused of harassing and assaulting her. The police on Tuesday evening also recorded the statements of actress Kamya Punjabi and two others.
Meanwhile, Pratyusha’s friends and colleagues gathered at a gurudwara at Four Bungalows in Andheri for a prayer meeting. Actors such as Anup Soni, Smita Bansal, Kamya Punjabi and close friends of Pratyusha were present.
Surbi Chatterjee, a distant relative of Pratyusha, said, “Rahul should be arrested as soon as possible so that he doesn’t do to another girl what he did to Pratyusha.”
She added, “Pratyusha’s mother and father have given their statements. Rahul used to hit her and abuse her after drinking. He would also take her money. He is the culprit. I will record my statement tomorrow.”
Pratyusha was found dead at her Goregaon apartment, which she shared with Rahul, on April 1. The two had been living there for a couple of months, ever since she moved out of her Kandivli flat. Rahul told the police he had stepped out on Friday afternoon and when he returned, Pratyusha wasn’t answering the doorbell. He called her phone but got no answer. He then called a key maker to get help him enter the flat, which had been locked from the inside. Meanwhile, a neighbour’s cook saw them and asked Rahul what was wrong. The cook then entered the flat via the neighbouring balcony and saw Pratyusha hanging from a fan.
