Two persons, who allegedly tried to extort money from an ice cream manufacturing unit, were arrested on Thursday.
The police are on the look out for their five accomplices and suspect that all of them are part of an extortion racket operating in Mulund. The accused, Rajkumar Gupta alias Raju Seth, 44, and Manasi Mandar Rane, 36, were arrested on Wednesday, after the owner of the ice cream unit tipped the police off about them. “The accused and their accomplices had gone to Shriram ice cream factory in Mulund (West). They said they were from an NGO and came to the shop in a car with a red beacon,” said inspector J Jadhav, Mulund police station.
“The accused confronted the owner of the ice cream unit and reprimanded him for supplying adulterated products. They told him that one of his customers, a girl, had contracted food poisoning and said he would have to pay them Rs60,000 if he wanted to keep his unit open,” Jadhav added.
Suspecting foul play, the owner, Avinashkant Sharma asked his employee to call the police. The police checked the Mulund General Hospital, to find if any girl had been admitted for food poisoning. “There was no such case and a team reached the ice cream factory and arrested the duo,” the police said.
Police learnt during investigation that Seth had also taken money from two members of his NGO in exchange for higher posts. “We are investigating the NGO and seeing if the accused had the licence to run one,” said Jadhav.
Seth and Rane have been booked for extortion and unlawful assembly.
