Two people who specialised in stealing laptops from cars were arrested on Monday. The duo was arrested from their Vikhroli residence on Monday. The police said the accused have stolen around 12 laptops in the last one month.
The two 19-year-olds, Junaid Hashmi and Imitaz Khan — both Parksite residents at Vikhroli (East) — always operated between 9am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm. “ They operated in these time slots because the victims parked their vehicles in parking lots while they were at work. Imitiaz would walk past the cars to identify those that had laptops lying on the seat,” said assistant police inspector SN Bandage from the Powai police station.
Imtiaz would then inform Junaid who would enter the parking lot on his bike armed with a screwdriver. “Junaid would remove the rubber fitting, which lined the base of the car window using the screw driver. He would then remove the window and run way with the laptop on his bike,” added Bandage.
In the last one month, the duo stole laptops from parking lots at Hiranandani Hospital in Powai, Huma Adlabs theatre at Kanjurmarg and Dreams Mall at Bhandup, said the police. The duo’s luck ran out when a CCTV camera, installed outside the HSBC bank in Powai, captured them stealing another laptop on March 8.
“The accused sold the laptops to a shop for around Rs15,000. We are trying to find out if they are involved in any other cases,” Bandage said.
