The Thane traffic police officials stumbled upon two different vehicles having the same registration number while carrying out regular checks in the no-parking zones.
The two vehicles were a Toyota Innova and a Maruti Alto. While the Innova is registered in the name of Anusaya Patil, the Alto is owned by Sanjay Sonar.
“We were conducting our regular check on vehicles parked in no-parking zones. We found these vehicles near Gaondevi and first put jammers on the Innova. After clamping a few such vehicles, we put jammers on the Alto. It is then that we noticed the similarity in the registration numbers of Innova and Alto,” said Thane Nagar traffic police inspector Chandrakant Deshmukh.
“We brought both the vehicles to the Thane Nagar police station. We checked the documents of the Innova and found them to be genuine. However, the Alto owner was unable to furnish any documents. So, we have filed a case under section 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) of the Indian Penal code,” added Deshmukh.
Patil’s son was present when the Innova was clamped by the traffic cops. “The Innova is a 2005 model and is registered on my mother’s name. We have all the necessary documents and have shown them to the police,” said Shakha Patil (19), a Kasarwadavli resident.
However, Sonar was not able to show the documents and was therefore detained at the police station for some time.
The police have asked Sonar to get the documents by Wednesday. “We had brought this car, four years ago, from an agent who is my elder brother’s friend.
The documents are with the agent and we have asked him to get it tomorrow,” said Sonar’s younger brother Sunil (39), who resides in Kopri.
