A seven-year-old girl and her two-year-old brother were hit by a train while they were crossing tracks at the F-cabin gate in Shivaji Nagar, Kalyan on Wednesday.

Mahesh Singh, a local and eyewitness, said, “Sangeeta Sahu, a Class 4 student of Nutan Hindi High School in Kolsewade, was carrying Girish in her arms. Due to the ongoing foot overbridge work, the contractor has placed tin sheets on the tracks. She was unable to see train and was hit.”

Sangeeta was thrown nine feet away from the track and died on the spot. Girish was rushed to Rukmanibhai Hospital but died during treatment.

Angry residents ransacked the contractor’s office and workers on the site fled on seeing some who were heading towards them.

“This is the fourth incident in the last six months,” a local said adding that 600 students cross the tracks for going to school.

Raju Kamble, another resident, said, “Work on the overbridge has been on for months and now the contractor has started placing the tin sheets on the tracks.

“We will not allow the contractor to work until the railways and municipal corporation employ guards at the railway gates,” he added.

Subhash Patil, police inspector of Mahatma Phule police station, said, “We have asked the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation and the railway police to hire security guards till the overbridge is opened.
