The crime branch on Saturday arrested two of three accused, who cheated a Malad (East)-based jeweller of Rs20 lakh by selling him fake antique gold ornaments. An accomplice of the duo is wanted in the case.
The accused have been identified as Mohan Gehlot, 35, and Mira Gehlot, 37. While Mohan resides in Ulhas Nagar, Mira is a resident of Ghatkopar.
The duo was arrested after the crime branch officers received a tip off that they were going to cheat yet another jeweller. The police quickly swung into action and arrested the duo.
The accused had approached Mahesh Doshi, 47, promising to sell antique gold ornaments and gems, worth crores. The complainant bought them only to realise later that they were not real. He approached the Dindoshi police on March 7, following which a case of cheating was registered against the trio. “We have recovered ornaments worth Rs7.45 lakh, and gold and fake ornaments worth Rs23,000 from them,” said Jaywant Hargude, assistant commissioner of police (crime branch).
