Razak Sheikh went to the State Bank of India branch at SV Road Kandivli (W) to send Rs 10,000 to his family in Uttar Pradesh on May 14 when he was robbed by two conmen.
Raju (28) and his accomplice Nitin Abhinav Aawhad (48) allegedly approached Razak and requested him to help fill the deposit slip.
“As Razak was aware of such incidents in banks, he refused to help. The accused then gave him a bundle of Rs 50,000 saying, ‘You can take my bundle if you don’t trust me.’ This made the complainant think the person was genuine and he started helping with the form,” said assistant police inspector L.G. Shinde of the Kandivli police station.
When Razak looked up after some time, the accused had fled. When he checked the bundle he found it was full of paper notes.
Razak then registered a case with the police.
When Razak went to the bank on Tuesday, he saw Raju and raised an alarm after which, he was arrested.
Raju then named his accomplice who was arrested on Wednesday.
Raju and Aawhad are residents of Bhayandar and Malwani respectively.
“The gang used to target uneducated people by offering to fill their forms or count their money. They have changed their strategy and now approach depositors under the pretext of being uneducated and seeking help in filling forms,” added Shinde.
