The police have registered an attempt to murder case against four people over the firing on Ritu Bhatia, the 42-year-old estate agent from Colaba.
Two have been arrested and two, including the shooter, are still at large.
On Sunday, someone knocked on Bhatia’s door. She opened the door with the door chain still attached. When she found a stranger pointing a gun at her, she shut the door. The attacker fired one round at the door.
Iqbal Shaikh, assistant commissioner of police (Colaba division), said that Bhatia has alleged that the accused, who are also estate agents, had been threatening her in connection with the 14-acre land she owns at Lonavla.
In 2006, the four accused allegedly fired at the victim’s car over a property dispute.
Shaikh said: “In 2006, the three accused -- Anil Polekar, Ashok Nalawade, Bandu Phatak ---and an unidentified accused had fired on Bhatia’s car. The three were arrested then and released on bail. Bhatia has alleged that the trio had also threatened her over the phone a few days ago. The bone of contention between the two parties is the 14-acre plot she owns near Bushi dam in Lonavla.”
The police have registered a case of attempt to murder and common intention against the accused.
“Bhatia lives alone in her fourth floor residence at Mohini Mansion near Strand Cinema in Colaba, as her husband is abroad. The couple does not have any children. Her parents live on the second floor of the same building,” said a Colaba police officer, on condition of anonymity.
Watchman of Mohini Mansion said: “I was parking a vehicle when I heard a gun shot. I took the lift to the fourth floor and suspect the accused might have taken the stairs.”
