Two youngsters lost their lives after their motorcycle had a head-on collision with a Chevrolet Tavera hired by the Kasturba Marg police for election duty at Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivli on Wednesday afternoon. The 51-year-old driver of the vehicle, Sunil Govind Agane, was arrested after the incident.

The deceased have been identified as Vinod Kashi, 19, and Akhsay Kadam, 18, both residents of Charkop.

“Kashi was speeding and lost control of the bike while taking a turn. He rammed into the Tavera, which was coming from the other side. Due to the impact, both boys fell off the bike immediately,” said Ramrao Pawar, additional commissioner of police, north region.

The police said police officials were using the car to patrol inside the national park to check the polling booths.

“The boys were taken to Bhagwati hospital, but were declared dead at admission. Both had serious injuries all over their bodies, particularly on their heads,” said Pawar.

The police said Agane, who works as a driver for a private car rental service, has been held for causing death due to negligence.
