A husband-wife duo were killed in Rabale on Monday when a landslide caused a nearby mountain to crash on to their shanty’s roof while they were asleep. The incident occurred shortly after midnight at Bhavani Marg, Kaktari pada in the Bhimnagar slums.

The deceased have been identified as Tulsiprasad Mahuta, 35, who works in a private company and his wife Manti, 30.

Their son Vikas, 7, who was sleeping nearby, sustained head injuries. He was rushed to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) Hospital in Vashi for treatment.

The son of Tulsiprasad’s brother, who was sleeping outside the house was unhurt.

The area had earlier been declared dangerous by the NMMC. According to Rabale ward officer Bhaskar Sasane, “We had declared the area dangerous before the monsoon and asked the residents to shift out. They however refused.”
