An 18-year old student Ajit Yadav, was stabbed to death and his mother Lilavati, grievously injured by two unknown men who sneaked into their house on Thursday early morning. The men assaulted the duo with sharp weapons. Police have detained 12 people as part of investigations.

Yadav was a class XI student of Nirmala college, Malad. Lilavati (40), who sustained serious injuries on her stomach and chest area, is being treated in the Intensive care unit (ICU) of Bhagwati Hospital at Borivli.

According to the police, the incident happened in Janupada area of Kandivli where Ajit, his elder brother Sujit (21), mother Lilavati (40) and father Mahendra were sleeping inside their one-room shanty.

Sujit, who is pursuing his TYBCom from Thakur College in Kandivli, said that he got up at around 4:40am to go to the common public toilet outside the shanty and latched the door of his home from outside.

“It seems the accused entered the room after Sujit left. They stabbed Ajit with a sharp weapon by gagging his mouth with a pillow,” said Senior Police Inspector Anant Kenjle of Samta Nagar police station. Kenjle added that hearing Ajit’s screams, his mother started shouting for help. “The accused stabbed her too,” he continued.

“On hearing loud noises I got up to find my son (Ajit) and wife in a pool of blood. In the dimly lit room, I could only see two masked men trying to flee,” said Ajit’s father; Mahendra, a water-tanker driver.

The accused while fleeing brushed against Sujit who was entering the room. The victims were rushed to the hospital, where Ajit was declared dead before admission.

Sources said that Sujit had a fight about five days ago and the murder could be a case of mistaken identity, as the accused must have come to killed Sujit instead of his brother.
