Two unidentified men shot at Bhaskar Dattu Kachre, the jailor of Taloja jail, on Sunday evening. The motive behind the attack is not yet known, but unconfirmed sources claimed that it could be reprisal for Kachre’s action against certain gangsters inside the jail.
Kachre who has been admitted to MGM hospital in Kamothe is said to be out of danger.
The incident occurred around 7 pm opposite the Rapid Action Force (RAF) station at Papdi Cha Pada in Taloja. Sources said he was on his way to get some clothes stitched.
Datta Ghule, senior police inspector of Taloja police station, said, “Kachre was travelling towards Panvel in a car with a friend when the car was obstructed near the jail circle by two men on a motorcycle. The motorcyclists sped off soon after.”
Ghule said, “The two men on the bike then caught up with the car opposite the RAF station and fired at it from the driver’s side. Kachre was hit twice on his thighs.”
Though the police refused to divulge the probable reason for the attack on the jailor, sources said that Kachre had told police that he had beaten up two jail inmates Mahesh Shetty and Vikhe Deshmukh on Saturday and that the attack on him could be revenge for that.
Shetty who is believed to be part of the Vikhe Deshmukh gang that is notorious for extortion, is accused of firing at a builder’s office in Ulwe in Navi Mumbai in January this year.
