They had robbed a businessman’s house to send their friends on a weeklong pilgrimage to Shirdi.

The police have arrested two Tilak Nagar residents — Sachin Mehta (21) and Raju Dede (22) — for allegedly robbing pharmaceutical exporter Sai Shyam Iyer’s flat of cash and valuables valued at Rs 18 lakh last month. The loot was reportedly used to send 35 of their friends to pilgrimage, the police said.

“They were arrested when they came back from the trip,” said a police official from Tilak Nagar police station.

The police said the accused, both historysheeters with five cases against them, had broken into Iyer’s second-floor flat in Tilak Nagar through the sewage pipe on January 13. Iyer was in Hyderabad with his family to attend a family function.

The police said the duo sold the loot to a jeweller at a cheap rate and used the money to finance the trip. Though none of their friends have been arrested, the police are investigating whether they knew about the source of the money. The accused were booked on charges of theft, dishonestly receiving stolen property and house breaking.
