Two robbers were convicted by the sessions court on Thursday for attacking three men and stealing their money and valuables in 2010. Interestingly, while one of the men died in hospital from serious injuries, the two robbers have been sentenced to life for attempted murder.
The prosecution's case was that Sunil and Prasad Jadhav attacked Mahendra Mayura for his money and other valuables.
The two accosted Mayura when he was using a public urinal on March 27, 2010, near Oshiwara police station. When Mayura shouted for help, the two hit him with an iron rod. Hearing his cries, two of his friends, Sachin Nadgadve and Arun Yadav, ran to his aid.
The two robbers then turned on Nadgavde and Yadav showering them with blows with the iron rod. They then took their money and cell phones and escaped.
Passers-by who came by the injured men, called up the police and the three were taken to the government hospital.
While Mayura and Yadav recovered from their injuries, Nadgadve died during treatment.
The police had first registered a case of looting against two unknown persons. However, a minor who was present at the spot, helped the police prepare sketches of the robbers.
Based on the sketches the police arrested the two men on the very next day.
During the trial, public prosecutor Deepak Ladhe examined 25 witnesses to prove the case.
The court accepted Ladhe's argument and sentenced the accused to life imprisonment.
