Two students drowned while swimming in the Mahim creek on Tuesday evening. This is the fourth such incident of drowning this year.
The deceased, identified as Yashodhan Gangurde (18) and Mangesh Pagare (15), were students of Class 11 and Class 10, respectively.
According to the Mahim police officials, Gangurde and Pagare had come to the creek at around 2 pm along with their another friend, Pappu Kori (15).
All the three are the residents of Matunga Labour Camp, the police officials said. While Gangurde and Pagare decided to go for a swim, Kori was taking care of their clothes.
The witnesses said that Gangurde and Pagare went too far into the creek and so they were dragged deeper due to the water currents.
“Seeing his friends drowning, a terrified Kori ran towards their home and informed their parents about the incident.”
The parents immediately reached the sport but by then the police and fire brigade officials had already started the rescue work. While Gangurde’s body was fished out by late afternoon, Pagare’s body could not be found.
Santosh Chavan, a local who helped in the police in the rescue operation, said, “Our boys too dived into the creek to help in the rescue work, but could not save them.”
“Had the third boy (Kori) informed us immediately, the rescue work could have started early and we could have possibly save the boys,” said another local.
Police inspector V. Kulkarni of Mahim police station, said, “Gangurde’s body has been sent to Sion hospital for post mortem.”
