Mumbai University has announced its decision to continue with its old schedule for theory papers. The TYBcom exams, scheduled to begin on March 28, will see more than 60,000 students appearing for the exams.

Around 100 teachers from city colleges attended a meeting where they requested the university to postpone the theory exams in the wake of the disrupted practicals and the month long exam-related boycott.

“We requested the vice chancellor to announce the postponement but he said it was a decision the board of examinations would have to take,” said CR Sadasivan, president of the Bombay University and College Teachers’ Union.

The university is however, determined to proceed with exams as scheduled, and said they would also simultaneously try and ensure talks between teachers and government officials.

“In the interest of students we are continuing with the preparation for exams,” said Naresh Chandra, pro vice chancellor of the university.

If matters are not sorted out before the start of the University theory papers, they could go the way of the practicals, which have seen only some centres conducting the exams.

On Monday, only 51 of the 79 centres were operational. Exams in eight state universities have also been disrupted. Unions are upset with the state’s failure to address demands related to salary arrears and appointments.

The university has called for a meeting on Tuesday with principals of colleges where exams have not been conducted yet to request them to do so.
