UK eyes health sector

Your education and health domains are likely to get a touch of the United Kingdom.

Investors in the UK have evinced interest in making a presence in the two fields in India through the public-private partnership (PPP) model.

This was stated by Lord Mayor of London, Ian Luder, on Tuesday at a conference on financing of infrastructure.

The PPP model is an arrangement between public and

private sectors with a clear agreement for delivery of public infrastructure and delivery services.

“In UK, we have local level PPPs to manage schools with standards laid down by contracts,” Luder told Hindustan Times after the conference held at a city hotel.

“For India, we can look at bundling up a cluster of schools that can be given out for developing infrastructure and giving our expertise,” he added.

This comes as a boost to a recent announcement made by Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Kapil Sibal, about formulating a broad PPP framework to attract private agencies for collaboration in expanding educational

facilities in the country, as

mentioned in the 11th Five-Year Plan.

So far, India has seen PPP funding from global firms in infrastructure projects like the Delhi Metro, the Bangalore airport, which has now been extended to the Mumbai Metro.

It is for the first time that this sort of funding will be extended to the fields of education and health.

“We are in the planning stages of PPP model for education,” said Gajendra Haldea, advisor to Planning Commission of Deputy Chairman.

“Our demand is more and we can only bridge the gap in social sectors like health and education through PPP,” added Haldea.

“We already have universities like Oxford, Cambridge, Warwick that have lined up to make their presence felt in the field of education in India, through investment,” said

Vicki Treadell, British deputy high commissioner, Western Region.

Their participation, he said, would be to set up world-class infrastructure for education institutes and hospitals. This can be extended to provide expertise in areas of teacher training and certification.
