A 48-year-old unani doctor from Bandra was arrested on Monday after he allegedly sedated a 12-year-old girl under the pretext of giving her a medicine and raped her.

The incident took place on Wednesday, but came to light only on Sunday when the girl confided to her family. The police said the victim, a Class 4 student, was on her way to school and was walking alone through Maulana Baba Lane in Bandra (west) when Tahir Ansari, whose house is located along the route, called out to her. Ansari then lured her into his house with the promise of potato chips and medicine.

“He told her he would give her a medicine that would ensure she was always in good health and gave her a black-coloured pill and chips. After eating the pill, she got drowsy. Ansari then locked the room and raped her,” said an officer from Bandra police station.

After the assault, Ansari allegedly threatened to kill her if she told anyone about what had happened and let her go. Around 1.30 pm, the victim went back home.

On Sunday, the girl’s family noticed that she was quiet and upset and asked her what the matter was, which is when she narrated the incident to her cousins and aunt.

When her uncle, who was not in the city, returned late on Sunday, her aunt told him about the incident, and they decided to lay a trap for Ansari.

“I was shocked, but it can’t change what has happened to my niece,” her uncle said. “We asked my niece to call Ansari and tell him that she needed to meet him. When he landed up at the spot, we caught him and handed him over to the police.”

The Bandra police have booked Ansari for rape and sexual assault under sections of the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

The victim’s father, an auto driver, and mother live in Bangalore. Her maternal uncle brought her to the city three years ago to secure a better future for her. Since then, she has been living with her uncle, aunt and their five children.

Ansari was produced before court on Monday and remanded in police custody till January 27.
