A day after a major fire broke out at Gold Mohur mills at Dadar, the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
Fire brigade officials visited the spot and recorded statements of witnesses and workers who were present inside the mill. “There are many unanswered questions,” said Chief Fire Officer Uday Tatkare, adding, “There were fires in more than one area at a given time, which is suspicious, given the fact that the mill was defunct, and had no activity since the last few months.”
Three fire brigade officials were injured when parts of the roof fell on them after they first visited the spot to investigate the cause of the fire on Thursday. They were rushed to KEM Hospital, Parel.
While fire officer Anil Chadke’s leg was fractured, officers Santosh Mali and Jagannath Yadav sustained minor injuries. Officials said the two-storied building in which the fire broke out is highly unstable, with bits of it continuously falling off.
The investigating team said that one day before the fire, some machinery had been sold, and a group of loaders had come to the mill to take the machines away.
The mill watchmen had asked these men not to smoke on the premises, since it contained inflammable substances. The fire officials will also speak to these loaders.
