An unidentified man in his early twenties drowned off Mahim beach on Sunday afternoon.
The fire brigade got a call at 1.45pm from a woman staying in a nearby building who said she saw the man drowning near the sea-front garden next to Hinduja Hospital.
The fire brigade reached the spot at 2pm and search operations continued till 7.30pm when the body was finally found.
Fire brigade officials used police speedboats to carry out the search operations.
The body was taken to Sion hospital. No relative had come forward to claim the body till the time of going to print.
With the monsoon approaching, the civic body will post more lifeguards to cover all the beaches in the city.
Police inspector Vinay Kulkarni said: “A group of youngsters came to the police station and told us they saw someone drowning. We rushed to the spot and began looking for the victim. We found his body after five hours and fished it out with the help of lifeguards and locals.”
On weekends, when the number of people at the beach is high, the civic body will post firemen and also augment the number of the lifeguards.
Drowning cases rise during the monsoon because of the high tides.
