Commuters using the harbour line on Wednesday had a harrowing time during the peak morning hours. A Panvel to Wadala train was cancelled, after it was detained at Nerul from 7.55am to 8.20am due to a unit defect, which delayed subsequent trains causing a rush on platforms.

“The Panvel-Vadala train was detained for 25minutes at Nerul due to a unit defect. The passengers in the above train were evacuated at Nerul and the train was taken to Sanpada car shed. The defect caused 20minutes delay to the other services,” said AK Singh, public relation officer (PRO) of Central Railway (CR).

Though the railway authorities claimed that the delay lasted only 20 minutes, commuters said that there was no service for almost an hour between 8am and 9 am.

“I arrived at Sanpada station around 8.30am and boarded a train at 9am but the passengers who had come before me said that there had been no service for over an hour. I had to leave the train since it was heavily crowded,” said Anita Fernandez, 42, Sanpada resident and banker.

Commuters also complained that the delay was not announced at the harbour line stations.

“Nobody had any clue why the services were not running. The indicators were not working; neither were there any announcement about the disruption. We all were waiting, clueless, for the arrival of the train. If we had been informed about the delay, we could have taken other modes of transport,” said Sandeep Mane, 22, Govandi resident and accountant.
