The Mumbai University has decided to drop the book, Such A Long Journey, from the syllabus of Second Year Bachelor of Arts (SYBA) following protests by Shiv Sena students wing Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena (BVS).

The BVS and the Sena had alleged that the book had derogatory and insulting remarks on Maharashtrians and met Rajan Welukar, the vice chancellor of the university, on Wednesday.

“The book did have insulting remarks and we have decided to drop it and will postpone the examination for students who have studied the book,” said a university official.

“A committee has been formed to come with alternative system for these students and it will submit its report in a week. The examination will be held accordingly.”

Members of the BVS had on Tuesday staged agitation outside the university camopus at Fort against inclusion of the book in SYBA syllabus.
