A 45-year-old US national was found dead in his hotel room in Colaba on Sunday night. The police suspect that William David Thomas, who had been staying at Volga Hotel, may have died due to drug overdose.

This was allegedly his ninth attempt to commit suicide, the police said.

Iqbal Shaikh, assistant commissioner of police, said, “Thomas had been staying in Mumbai for the past 15 days.”

On Sunday, when the housekeeping staff knocked on his first floor room, they did not get any response. The attendant saw blood coming out from the gap below the door and informed the police. The police broke open the door and found his body on the floor. Thomas was rushed to St George Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

The doctors said that on June 9 Thomas was brought unconscious by the staff of Salvation Army Hotel in Colaba where he had been staying.

“We suspected he had suffered a drug overdose so he was put on a ventilator. He was discharged on June 14,” said a doctor who was treating Thomas.

Thomas had told the doctor that he did not wish to live and this was his eighth attempt to commit suicide.

He told the doctors that he was suffering from severe abdomen pain and had visited some private doctors in Colaba who advised him to consume morphine. “He was addicted to hashish and when I advised him to undergo treatment, he refused,” added the doctor, requesting anonymity.

Thomas was supposed to leave the country on Sunday night but had got an extension of a day.

The police have registered a case of accidental death.
