Impressed by Class 4 students of Anjuman-I-Islam Girls High School, who are learning four languages, US Senator George LeMieux said American schools too should rise to similar standards.
The senator visited the school at Mumbai Central on Monday to understand the Indian education system.
"Despite large class sizes, these girls are learning four languages effectively and getting good results, which goes to prove that the quality of teachers is more important than the size of the class," said LeMieux, who felt that the American education system does not emphasise on language education enough. "It is definitely something I want to improve back home," he added.
The other topic on the agenda was to increase trade between the two countries, which according to the senator share similar values.
"Both India and America believe in democracy, human rights and promoting entrepreneurship," LeMieux said, emphasising on the reduction of trade barriers for America’s exports of fertilisers to India.
The senator is pushing for a legislation to be passed in the US Congress to give impetus to American exports to India. When asked about trade barriers raised by America against Indian exports, LeMieux said he will try to reduce regulations, restrictions and taxes on imports into the US.
