With one eye on the elections and another on upstaging their rivals, Congress corporators on Wednesday objected to a presentation about the proposed capital-value based property tax system, wherein some details had been mentioned in English, demanding that it be translated to Marathi.
Corporators led by the Congress, across party lines, protested against English being used in the presentation and demanded that it be called off.
Corporators privately admitted that the incident was a reason to buy time in deferring the decision on the implementation of the new tax system.
The proposed capital value system for property tax has been a contentious issue for both the ruling Sena-BJP alliance as well as the opposition.
The leader of Opposition, Rajhans Singh, said, “How can the Sena claim they have made the BMC 100% Marathi in its functioning, when these presentations are in English?”
He was supported by Sena’s Ravindra Waikar’s also ‘condemned’ the use of English.
