K Ramdas Kamath, 60, the bus driver who allegedly mowed down a 4-year-old student of St Anne’s High School close to her residence in Vasai on February 28, was released on bail on Thursday.
HT Kumbhar, assistant inspector, Manickpur police station, said: “Kamath was arrested on charges of causing death due to negligence, rash driving and causing grievous hurt by an act endangering life. He was also booked under section 187 of the Motor Vehicle Act for causing accident. Kamath was produced before a local magistrate’s court on Thursday and was granted bail on a surety of Rs10,000.”
Kamath, an employee of a private carrier that has a contract with St Anne’s High School, has been working with the school in Vasai for the past six months. On February 28, Kamath dropped junior KG student Tanishka Nautiyal near Girnar View Apartments in Krishna Township area.
While Nautiyal headed towards her building, Kamath reversed the bus to leave, thus knocking the girl down. She succumbed to injuries on her way to the hospital. Kamath told the police that he did not see Nautiyal while he reversed the bus. “It was only when people from the vicinity asked him to stop that he realised that she was knocked down,” said Kumbhar.
The police said that ex-army man Kamath has no previous record of accidents and was not driving under the influence of alcohol. Said an eyewitness: “There were not many people around when the incident occurred. Nobody noticed the girl. On hearing her cries, we asked the driver to stop.”
The police said the girl died due to internal bleeding.
