An attempted double suicide didn’t quite follow the plan when two Vashi-based lovers decided to jump from the Vashi creek bridge.

The boy jumped, the girl didn’t. So he swam to the nearest pillar and waited to be rescued.

The jumper, Chetan Patil (26), lives in Mankhurd, and is an engineer at Bharat Petroleum. The girl, aged 22, lives in the same area.

The two arrived at the bridge around 8 pm on Friday.

Sanjay Malbe, a witness, and editor of Marathi daily Punyanagri, said: “I was driving home from work when I saw the boy jump into the creek. I rushed to the girl and stopped her from jumping.”

Malbe said the girl told him that Patil, against his wishes, had been engaged to another girl on Thursday.

Faced with parental opposition to their affair, the lovers decided on suicide. Malbe then called the police.

Witnesses saw Patil swim to one of the pillars of the bridge.

Prabhakar Gade, Vashi fire officer, said: “He got on to the pillar and sat there. We got in a boat and rescued him.”

The two were then taken to Vashi police station.

Raosaheb Sardesai, senior police inspector, said a case had not been registered as they did not want to put additional pressure on the two.

“We called their parents, gave them a stern warning and let them go,” Sardesai said, adding Patil claimed he slipped and fell into the creek.
