Ferry rides between Versova and Madh may soon cost more. The recent hike in diesel prices has forced ferry operators to demand an increase in rates. The proposed charges are Rs 2 for locals and Rs 3 for others.
The administration of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has asked the Improvement Committee to approve the hike. The committee will discuss the proposal on December 29. The governing body, the Maharashtra Maritime Board, has approved the new rates. Twenty-five paise per ticket goes to the board as surcharge.
Ferry operator since 1963, the Vesave Machhimaar Sahakari Society Limited, has been demanding a fare hike for the past five years. The fare has been the same for the past 10 years.
The current ferry charges are Re 1 for locals and Rs2 for others. The society wants a higher tariff in view of increased running costs that includes rising fuel expenditure.
“We had demanded a fare of Rs 2 for locals and Rs 4 for others five years ago, but it was rejected. We proposed it again last year. It is finally being considered, though the hike for others is too little,” said Harichandra Dhakle, chairman of the society.
These services are mostly used by fisher folk. Four ferries carry 7,000 passengers daily. “Diesel prices have increased many times over the years and we also need to pay our workers who have been demanding a pay hike,” said Rajhans Tapke, director of the society.
Manoj Kotak, chairman of BMC’s Improvement Committee, said the committee would discuss the issue at the meeting on December 29.
