A day after the arrest of Saquib Nachan, an accused in the 2003 Mulund blast case who is currently out on bail, for the attack on Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader and lawyer Manoj Raicha, the VHP and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have called for a Bhiwandi bandh on Monday.

On Friday, while Raicha was on his way back home, a man came from the opposite direction and fired three rounds at him. Raicha managed to dodge two bullets, while the third one grazed his right arm.

Nachan, who was granted bail in the blast case last year, was arrested in connection with the attack on Raicha, on Saturday. He has been remanded in police custody for 10 days.

Nachan was also arrested in 2002 for the murder of VHP leader Lalit Jain in Bhiwandi. He was acquitted in the case in 2006 for want of evidence.

In 2011, Nachan allegedly threatened to eliminate Raicha. The advocate, who is fighting against illegal slaughterhouses in the Konkan region, informed the Thane police about Nachan’s threat and was provided with round-the-clock police cover.

MK Bhosale, deputy commissioner of police, Bhiwandi, said, “We are taking precautions to avoid any law and order situation in Bhiwandi.”
