The 22-year-old gang-rape victim has told the police that she had an argument with the three accused on Saturday afternoon after she caught them peeping into her house.

According to the victim’s statement to the police, the three accused had been frequenting the lane she lives in at Ganpat Patil Nagar slums for the past few weeks. The accused would peep into her house and pass lewd comments at her.

“The victim had complained to her husband about the men and had asked him to shift to another rented room. However, despite having looked for another place, he could not find one. Tired of the harassment, the couple was planning to leave the area in the next few weeks,” said an official from MHB Colony police station.

However, on Saturday afternoon, when the victim got frustrated with the frequent visits the accused made to her lane, she confronted them in a fit of rage.

“The victim asked them why they were frequenting her lane and passing lewd comments at her. In response, they hurled obscenities at her and fled,” said the official.

The police said that the couple did not complain to the police about the recurrent harassment.

The police have recorded the statements of four persons from the neighbourhood. “They have said that they saw the men enter her house with a chopper and also heard them threaten the couple. They said that they could hear the woman shout for help, but were too scared to interfere,” said the official.
