Pedestrians using the level crossing gate at Vikhroli station need not endanger their lives anymore. The central railway (CR) has finally gone ahead with its plan to build a new rail over bridge (ROB) at the spot, in lieu of a level crossing gate.
"The new ROB will be built in 15 months and its estimated cost of construction is Rs 6.41 crore," said a senior railway official.
This has been a long-pending demand by locals and passenger associations. But, although railway authorities had planned to build one in the '90s, the plan got stuck in red tape and other local tussles.
Two years ago, the CR announced the revival of the plan after hundreds of locals along with some NGO activists held a rail roko and stalled CR services for a few hours after the death of three people in separate incidents at the Vikhroli level crossing in November 2010.
State government and railway authorities had announced the constructing of a foot over-bridge (FOB) and an ROB at the time. However, CR only built a new 4.8-metre-wide FOB costing around Rs 2 crore at the Dadar end of Vikhroli station, with the ROB plan still on paper.
Recently, the railways decided to go ahead with the construction of this ROB and initiated the procedure of appointing a contractor.
