Karthik Muthu, a 14-year-old boy from Nehru Nagar in Vile Parle (West), drowned on Monday evening while swimming near Juhu beach.

His body was found on Tuesday morning, almost 15 hours after the incident.

According to the police, the incident took place around 2pm on Monday, when Karthik had gone to the beach with a group of friends from his neighbourhood.

Along with some of his friends, Karthik entered the water for a swim, but he was pulled in by the tides. Some of Karthik’s friends then ran out of the water and informed others at the beach.

The police was informed about the incident, and life guards and fire brigade officers soon reached the spot.

“The fire brigade officers and life guards conducted search operations till evening, but could not trace the body,” said a police officer. However, they found his clothes and shoes on the shore.

Karthik had told his parents he would be back home by 5pm. “When Karthik did not return, his father went to Juhu police station to lodge a missing person case, where he recognised his son’s clothes,” said Pandit Thakre, inspector, Juhu police station.

“The body was found around 6am on Tuesday, from Versova beach. After we got a call from the locals, Karthik’s father was called to identify the body,” said Thakre.
