Work on the Virar car shed under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) phase-I has been delayed by six months. The new deadline is June 2011 from the earlier deadline of December 2010.
The Virar car shed that is being built partly under MUTP phase-I (with work of Rs 218 crore) and MUTP phase-II (amounting to Rs 100 crore), will accommodate 15-car trains as well as the new-age trains.
Senior officials from MRVC said, “The latest deadline of MUTP-I has been pushed to June 15, 2011 because we have managed to complete 70 per cent of the total work till June.”
The other pending project under MUTP phase-I is procuring new-age trains. The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) was supposed to procure 129 new-age trains by December, which has now been postponed to June 2011.
“Presently there are 92 trains and we expect 27 more by December. The remaining 10 trains will be procured by June 2011,” said a MRVC official.
The World Bank team that recently approved a loan for MUTP Phase-II, visited the Virar car shed on Tuesday. The WB team is here for a week wherein they will have a series of meetings on the progress of the projects. They will sign a legal agreement with MRVC for the Rs 4,295 crore loan on July 23.
