The proposed airport at Navi Mumbai is set for a long haul with the central Environment Ministry's Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) asking the Maharashtra government on Friday to conduct an environment impact assessment of all 17 alternative sites for the airport. Of these sites, six fall within the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ).
Apart from impact assessment, the state will have to minimise the project area for all 17 sites so that there is least impact on environment.
The EAC decided to form a sub-group to visit some of the alternative sites to see where the project can come up with minimum loss to environment.
Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel, who was in Mumbai, refused to budge: "There is no question of Rewas-Mandwa or Kalyan. The civil aviation ministry will not consider any other site but Navi Mumbai."
