A day after Hindustan Times reported on how a 22-year-old woman was made to run from pillar to post to identify the man who had uploaded obscene pictures of another woman with her details on a social networking site, joint commissioner of police (crime) Himanshu Roy inquired with the cyber cell about the case.

Unknown men made obscene calls to the woman on December 13. When she asked them how they had got her number, she learnt that a page had been created with her name and number on Facebook. She approached the Oshiwara police the next day to file a complaint. They directed her to the cyber cell that closed the page immediately.

“The cyber cell had promised that they would provide me with a report on the person who created the page within a few weeks. When I approached them in February, the officials told me that the report had been dispatched to their zone 9 office. The zone 9 officials told me that the report had never reached them and that the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the accused’s computer had not been traced,” she said.

“We went back to the cyber cell, where they said that the report must have been misplaced. They were making us run between two police stations. None of them were helpful with the report. We could file a first information report (FIR) with the Oshiwara police only in the first week of March,” said the victim’s brother.

Roy said, “Our officials got in touch with Facebook. They are yet to revert with the IP address. As soon as we receive the report, it will be provided to the complainant and action will be taken against the perpetrator.”

“It is not difficult to get the IP address, unless the server is not based in the country. I am surprised that there has been such a delay. We will ask the officials concerned to expedite work,” said another senior official, on condition of anonymity as he is not authorised to speak to the media.

The Oshiwara police, meanwhile, said that they had brought in two to three persons for questioning. But, they had no leads on the accused yet.
