Water supply to the western suburbs, from Goregaon to Dahisar, will be disrupted for at least eight to 10 days from May 3. The BMC has decided to carry out repair work in an underground tunnel at Malad, which was damaged on February 17, when a private borewell was being dug there without permission.
The tunnel, which supplies water to areas between Goregaon, Malad, Kandivli, Borivli and Dahisar, has been leaking 3-4 million litres of water every day since it was punctured. The tunnel will be dewatered (made dry) for an inspection of the damaged portion and the subsequent repairs.
During the period of repairs, water supply will have to depend on an old network of pipelines that was in use before 2004. Unused for six years, the pipes are now worn out and rusted.
