When law-makers break the law

mumbai Updated: Jan 14, 2010 01:11 IST

The state government has decided to file a police complaint against former Jalgaon legislator, Ramesh Vitthal Chaudhary, for submitting 41 fake medical bills and claiming reimbursements of more than Rs 20 lakh.

The racket was exposed after non-government organisation Janhit Manch filed a public interest litigation in 2006 alleging that MLAs and MLCs submit fake medical bills and claim lakhs as reimbursements.

The Bombay High Court has now asked the government what it plans to do about the other MLAs and MLCs who have committed a similar fraud.

Hindustan Times does a recap of the case and lists the other legislators guilty of cheating the state government of at least Rs 36.7 lakh.
