‘Will seek custody of gangster aide’

mumbai Updated: Apr 16, 2011 01:48 IST

The crime branch is likely to seek the custody of Devendra Jagtap alias JD — a bid to release whom from the sessions court was foiled on April 8. JD, an aide of underworld gangster Bharat Nepali, is currently lodged in Arthur Road Jail for his alleged involvement in the murder of advocate Shahid Azmi.

According to sources, JD was aware of the plot and had spoken to gangster Santosh Shetty and others involved in the plan. The crime branch got a whiff of the plan through a telephonic interception. Consequently, the attempt was foiled.

“We are going to seek JD’s custody as per the provisions under section 424 of IPC (attempt to flee from custody),” said a senior crime branch officer.
