The state prison authorities on Friday assured the Bombay high court that Pune businessman Hasan Ali Khan, who was arrested on charges of money laundering and tax evasion, will be sent for medical check-up on Saturday.
Assistant public prosecutor Anuradha Mane told a vacation bench of justice PD Kode and justice Abhay Thipsay that Khan, who has been suffering from various ailments, will be sent to Sir JJ Hospital for medical check-up and treatment.
The assurance came after the bench rapped the jail authorities for failing to comply with orders of a special court, which is trying cases registered against Khan under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002.
Khan had moved the high court, alleging that jail authorities had failed to comply with orders of the special court, and had not got his medical check-up done.
“What is the problem in medical examination? Why are you not taking him to a government hospital?” the bench asked after Khan’s counsel IP Bagaria complained about the negligent attitude of the Arthur Road jail authorities.
Mane said that on May 7, Khan was referred to JJ Hospital for medical examination, but he refused to go.
But Bagaria insisted that till date Khan was not referred to any hospital. He also submitted before the high court that the jail authorities were not presenting record of Khan’s medical examination, which was done at St George’s Hospital. The judges directed jail authorities to take Khan for medical check-up along with the earlier medical record for reference.
