At a meeting held at Central Railway headquarter at CST with members of parliament (MP), railway board chairman Vinay Mittal promised to start 15-car local trains between CST and Kalyan during peak hours by the end of September.
He also ordered Central and Western Railway to raise the height of platforms where there is a huge gap between the platform and footboard of local trains, said sources.
While all the MPs from Thane district were present for the meeting called for addressing railway issues pertaining to Mumbai, only Eknath Gaikwad was present out of the five elected MPs from the city. Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut was also present.
Kalyan MP Anand Paranjpe and Thane MP Sanjeev Naik had demanded the 15-car locals. “If railway runs 15-car trains during peak hours, the carrying capacity will increase by 25%,” said Paranjpe.
According to sources, Mittal has also promised to run Virar-Dahanu suburban services after December on the demand of Palghar MP Baliram Jadhav.
Some MPs raised the issue of development of slums on railway land and demanded a comprehensive policy. “If the Railway is commercially exploiting city land through the Railway land development authority, it should also have proper rehabilitation policy,” said Paranjpe. Mittal has reportedly assured them that he will look into the matter.
Naik demanded expedition of the work of Seawood-Uran railway line and development of Thane station. Bhiwandi MP Suresh Taware demanded suburban connectivity to Bhiwandi city as it is growing rapidly. Nashik MP Sameer Bhujbal requested the departure of CST-Manmad Rajya Rani express from Dadar instead of Lokmanya Tilak Terminus.
