Neelam Sayyed, a 25-year-old woman, has alleged that her husband was tortured while in police custody at Bandra police station, following which he attempted suicide and was admitted at Bhabha Hospital. The police, have rubbished the woman's allegations.
Neelam said her husband, Nadeem Ali Mohammed Sayyed, 32, a second-hand car dealer, was given custody at Arthur Road jail after he was arrested on January 10 in connection with a robbery case. He was remanded in police custody at Bandra police station on Friday until February 17.
"My husband told me that on Friday night, he was stripped naked at the police station and beaten up mercilessly. He was also made to run naked in the cold around the police station while the policemen beat him up," said Neelam, a housewife who lives with her six-year-old son, Hussain, at Kurla.
Afraid of further police torture, Neelam said, Nadeem consumed poison at Bandra police station the next morning.
"He was scared of the police, he told me, and could not take the torture any more. Feeling defeated, he consumed poison and was admitted at Bhabha hospital. I got a call from Bandra police station telling me he had consumed poison," said Neelam.
Inspector D S Patil of Bandra police station said Nadeem was not tortured while in police custody, stating, "All this is a sham, Nadeem just wants to avoid police custody."
