A 23-year-old woman was allegedly set on fire by her husband and in-laws on Sunday night. The incident occurred around 9.45pm at the Annabhau Sathe locality in Mankhurd.

The police have registered an attempt to murder and harassment case against the husband and in-laws of the victim, Meena Surve.

“Meena and Rajesh got married around a year ago,” said an officer from Mankhurd police station, adding that Rajesh works in a factory.

Soon after the wedding, Rajesh, 25, his parents —Naresh, 45, and Kalpana, 43 —and sister, Meena Salve, 30, started demanding Rs 1 lakh dowry. They threatened her with dire consequences and harassed her constantly, the police said.

He added: “Things turned ugly on Sunday after the victim had a fight with her husband. Rajesh and his parents doused Meena with kerosene and set her ablaze. They locked the door from outside,” the officer said, adding that the victim sustained 100% burns and was taken to Sion Hospital.

P D’Souza, senior inspector, Mankhurd police station, said: “We have registered a case against Rajesh, his parents, and sister under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 498- A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty). All suspects are on the run.”
