The escape bid of two bikers who were fleeing after snatching the handbag of a woman travelling in an auto on Carter Road, Bandra (West), ended after they ran into a nakabandi, and the victim, who was chasing the duo, alerted the on-duty policemen.

According to the Khar police, Anita Ambawade, 48, boarded an auto rickshaw from near the office of additional commissioner of police (west region) for Khar railway station with a male acquaintance, at 7.15pm on Sunday.

Soon after, two men on a Pulsar bike began to follow the auto rickshaw.

As the auto moved towards Khar, the bike came close and the pillion rider snatched the black-coloured handbag Ambawade had kept on her lap.

Ambawade raised an alarm and asked the auto driver to chase the bikers, who were racing towards Khar Danda on Carter Road. The bike reached Hanuman Nagar and the duo tried to make its way out of traffic on the road.

“After they noticed that there was a nakabandi ahead, they took a U-turn in an attempt to go unnoticed by the police. However, Ambawade alerted the police constables before the bikers could speed away,” said Valmik Kale, assistant inspector at Khar police.

The constable then nabbed the accused, who were later identified as Nadeem Shaikh, 29, and Mobin Kalyankar, 24. Ambawade narrated the incident to the police, after which the duo was taken to the Khar police station and arrested for robbery.

The police said they have recovered the stolen bag that contained a cellphone and an ATM card, which was returned to Ambawade. The police also seized the motorbike and are trying to find out if the bike is stolen.

The duo was booked for robbery under sections 392 (punishment for robbery) and 34 (act done by two or more persons with common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. The accused were produced before a metropolitan court on Monday.
