The bustling compartment of a Virar-Churchgate fast local became a makeshift delivery room for Sheetal Singh who gave birth to a baby girl on Tuesday. In the mad peak-hour rush, she delivered a baby girl between Mira Road and Dahisar stations.
Sheetal boarded the Churchgate-bound train that left Virar at 8.28 am, at Nallasopara with her aunt and husband.
“We were going to VN Desai hospital at Santacruz as she was experiencing pains. The doctors had asked us to admit her on Wednesday,” said Omkarnath Singh, Sheetal’s husband.
The couple has a 20-month-old girl.
They were sitting in the luggage compartment adjoining the ladies compartment. As soon as the train left Mira Road station at 9 am, she delivered the baby.
As she was coping with the trauma, the ladies in the compartment helped her. The motorman was informed, who informed the Borivli stationmaster. The train reached Borivli station at 9.07am.
“The lady and the baby were taken to the local hospital safely by the railway authorities and female government railway police officers at the station,” said S Chandrayan, chief
public relations officer, Western Railway.
Presently Sheetal is recuperating at Bhagwati hospital with her baby.
