A 23-year-old woman allegedly killed herself and her two-year-old daughter by walking into the sea on Friday. On Wednesday, police arrested the woman’s husband and in-laws for allegedly abetting the drastic move.
Police said Ranjana Dayal married Kishan around four years ago in Nepal. Her husband lived at Charkop and would visit her in Nepal often.
Finally, Ranjana moved to the city two months ago with her daughter Gayatri.
“After moving to the city, Ranjana suspected that Kishan was having an extra-marital affair. The two fought often over this,” said Mahesh Patil, deputy commissioner of police, zone 11. “Whenever she confronted Kishan, he would beat her and abuse her. His father and brother supported him,” Patil said.
After two months of torture, on June 15, Ranjana left home with her daughter and jumped into the sea. Their bodies were found by the Malwani police the following day near INS Hamla, Malad.
Ranjana’s parents, who live in Kandivli, told Charkop police that their daughter had been driven to suicide by her husband and in-laws.
A case under section 306 of the Indian Penal Code for abetment of suicide was registered against Kishan, his father Lalmohan and brother Mohan on Tuesday. The trio was arrested on Wednesday. “On the basis of the statement given by the deceased’s family, we have arrested the trio for abetting suicide. Further investigation is underway,” said Patil.
