Trombay police arrested a BPT employee, Mohammed Arif (40), for allegedly assaulting his pregnant wife, leading to a miscarriage on Thursday.
Nazo Begum (33), his first wife who was five months pregnant, is recuperating at a BPT hospital. The incident took place at Cheetah camp area of Chembur.
According to Munni Begum, Nazo’s sister, Arif married for the second time on April 20.
“He would come drunk and assault Nazo,” said Munni. He has been living with his second wife since then, she added.
The family said that on Tuesday afternoon, Arif came home and assaulted his daughter Afreen with a knife. When Nazo tried to intervene, he reportedly pushed her to the ground.
“He pulled her by her hair and hit her on her stomach,” added Munni.
A medical test revealed Nazo had a miscarriage, the relatives said.
According to a witness, the assault happened in front of the entire neighbourhood. Arif’s second wife was also present.
“Many people from the area tried to help Nazo but couldn’t stop him,” said Shameem Rahat, a neighbour. “Investigation is on,” said Senior Police Inspector S. Jagtap.
